Acne Won't Go Away? How a Dermatologist Can Help You

If you have a lot of acne on your face that will not go away no matter what you do, a dermatologist can help you. Below are three types of treatments they offer, so you can choose what you would like to do.

Medication

The first thing the dermatologist will do is to inspect your acne closely. This is because in most cases you will need to take an oral antibiotic as there is likely infection. Once you take the entire prescription you will go back to the dermatologist for further treatment.

There is ointment medication that is prescription strength the dermatologist may prescribe you. This medication is generally strong, so you will start out with a small dose a few times per week, and then slowly work your way up to daily.

Laser Light Therapy

If the medications do not work for you, the dermatologist can perform a treatment known as light therapy. The light therapy will kill any bacteria that you may have on your skin. When the doctor shines the light on skin, there is a substance that forms on your skin and then this kills the bacteria. The light therapy will also shrink oil glands that are on your skin which will shrink your pores and make your skin less oily. This is important as large pores and oily skin can result in acne.

Before the treatment starts the doctor will put medication on your skin to help your skin handle the light treatment. This is because in some people their skin is overly sensitive to this light. How often you have this light therapy will depend on how severe your acne is and how well your skin reacts to the light.

Chemical Peel

Another treatment option is a chemical peel. With this, the dermatologist will place a chemical solution on your skin. This solution removes the top layer of your skin revealing clear skin. Your skin will be overly sensitive after the procedure and also very red. Because of this you have to stay out of the sun until the redness goes away.

Chemical peels are not long lasting. Because of this you will have to have repeated treatments when your acne comes back again.

Your dermatologist will teach how you to take proper care of your skin. They will suggest the facial cleanser you should use during the morning and at night, as well as moisturizer you can use on your skin.
